Measuring a Charlotte roof from public data
Mecklenburg County publishes its building footprints as open data, so for addresses in the county the calculator on this page can read the ground footprint of the house from the county's GIS layer instead of asking you to guess it. The layer carries no area field; we compute the polygon area in the county's State Plane coordinate system (US survey feet) and apply your pitch and a waste allowance. The footprint includes attached garages and covered porches, which is usually what a roofer prices anyway, and it does not know how many stories the house has, which does not matter for roof area. Addresses elsewhere in North Carolina fall back to the state's emergency-management footprint layer.
