What a new roof costs in North Carolina, and why
North Carolina is a below-average state for roofing labor. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 survey puts the mean hourly wage for roofers in the state at $24.06 (median $23.56, about 3,060 roofers employed), against a national mean of $27.95. That gives a labor index of 0.861, so every labor dollar in the national cost tables becomes about 86 cents here. Material is priced nationally in this edition of the Index, so the whole gap between North Carolina and the US is labor.
On the 2026 Q3 Index that works out to $455 per square for an architectural shingle roof, range $358 to $551, which ranks the state 39 of 51 and sits -9.0% against the US typical of $500. The neighbours land close by: South Carolina $456 (rank 38), Virginia $463 (rank 34), Tennessee $436 (rank 49), Georgia $446 (rank 43).
A whole-roof number
The Index is per square (100 sq ft of roof surface) so it can be compared across places. For a whole house: a 2,000 sq ft ground footprint at a medium (6/12) pitch has a factor of 1.118, plus 10% cut waste, which is 24.6 squares. At the North Carolina typical that is about $11,185 for the shingles and the labor to install them, before tear-off of the old roof ($100 to $300 per square per layer), a permit ($100 to $500) and a dumpster ($280 to $700). The same roof in standing seam metal runs $830 to $1,489 per square in North Carolina (typical $1,160), because the material alone is $400 to $800 per square against $100 to $250 for architectural shingles. See the standing seam page for the source rows.
Cheaper options exist in the same tables. Three-tab shingles run $252 to $388 per square in North Carolina (typical $320), about $135 a square under architectural, or roughly $3,310 on the 2,000 sq ft example, at the cost of a shorter service life and a thinner look. A flat or low-slope membrane roof (TPO or EPDM) is $222 to $637 per square here, but it is priced on a near-flat area, so a whole-roof comparison with a pitched house is not like for like.
Inside the state: 11 metros
BLS publishes a roofer wage for 11 metropolitan areas that touch North Carolina, and the Index carries each one. Raleigh-Cary, NC is the most expensive at $466 per square (metro rank 164 of 263); Rocky Mount, NC is the least at $400 (rank 262). Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, the largest roofing labor market in the state with about 1,130 roofers, is $461; Raleigh-Cary is $466. The spread from the cheapest to the dearest NC metro is $66 per square, roughly $1,619 on the 2,000 sq ft example.
Outside the metros BLS groups the state into three nonmetropolitan areas: Eastern North Carolina ($22.67/hr, index 0.811); Central North Carolina ($21.80/hr, index 0.780); Western North Carolina ($23.11/hr, index 0.827). Those areas are not ranked in the Index; rural addresses use the state figure in the calculator.
Hail: the reason roofing demand in NC is lumpy
NOAA's Storm Events database logged 425 county-level hail events in North Carolina across 86 counties from 2023 to 2026 (160 in 2023, 104 in 2024, 139 in 2025, 22 in 2026, the last year partial), and 342 of them reported stones of one inch or larger, the size that starts to bruise asphalt shingles. The most-reported counties in that window were Wake (20), Robeson (16), Mcdowell (15), Pitt (15), Wilkes (15). Mecklenburg County logged 6, the largest 1.75 inches.
Two things follow. First, a hail season means a wave of roofs that are insurance jobs rather than out-of-pocket jobs, and a policy pays on its own terms (replacement cost or depreciated cash value, minus the deductible) rather than on a contractor's quote; the NC claim guide covers that. Second, a county event does not prove hail hit a particular roof. The address lookup on this page shows the county's NOAA history so a homeowner can ask an inspector the right question, not so they can skip the inspection.
How to use these numbers
- Treat the per-square figure as a check on quotes, not a quote. A written estimate from a licensed North Carolina roofer is the price; the Index tells you whether that estimate sits in the normal range for the state and metro.
- Confirm the square count. Contractors measure roof surface, not floor area; a two-story house has half the footprint of a one-story house of the same living area.
- Ask what the quote includes. Tear-off, decking repair, permit, disposal and flashing are the usual differences between a low bid and a complete one.
- Ranges are national and only labor is adjusted locally. Material prices do move by region and by supplier; that is a known limit of this edition and is stated on the methodology page.
